We had wild thunderstorms this past weekend and woke up to
some rain on Sunday. It has cooled off substantially. After the first few
really hot and humid days, this is a welcome change of the weather for a while…
Today our students started their school day in Frau
Wasnick’s 7th grade. In small groups or pairs the 7th
grade students picked an American and with “their” American they conducted
interviews where they compared German to American customs, culture and life.
After some shyness on both sides, the conversations got more comfortable and
the German students seized the great opportunity to improve their listening
comprehension as well as practice their English speaking skills. It was
wonderful to see how well these 7th graders can speak English (most
of them have learned two foreign languages by now, many of the student I talked
to also knew Latin).
After the interviews some of our American students gave the
presentations they had brought with them to a very interested crowd. The
students followed their schedules the rest of the school day and finished with
a homeroom.
I asked the students to write down something cool they
experienced so far, and something strange. We got mostly cool things and here
is a small excerpt:
“I went to Hohenzollern and it was so pretty!! It was
raining the whole time, but it made everything green and lush and I felt like a
princess…”
“I live in a town with 120 people and I met them all at a
party in the thunderstorm.”
“My host family has a pool and it’s made to look natural so
it looks like a pond.”
“I am the 15th exchange student in my host family’s
house.”
“My host family’s basement is the bottom part of a 100 year
old barn.”
